State Rose & Garden Show 2018
November 10th & 11th 10am- 4pm
Werribee Rose Gardens near the Werribee mansion is a must visit tourist attraction of Melbourne. Set close to the Mansion’s formal gardens, this rose garden was a winner of the prestigious World Federation of Rose Societies Award for Garden excellence in 2003. The roses are at its most magnificent from November to April which makes these months the best time to visit the garden. During the Spring, in the month of November, Victoria State Rose and Garden Show is organised here.
Rose Garden was part of the original Werribee homestead gardens and the work of replanting it into a Rose garden began in the early 80’s. The stage one of the garden was officially opened in November 1986. The Heritage Border was added in 1997 and extended in 2000. The garden flourishes on volunteer work and the Victorian State Rose Garden Supporters Group, a volunteer organisation works closely with Parks Victoria to ensure the garden is taken care of. The garden today boasts of the best collection of heritage Roses in Australia. Looked from above, the garden is designed in the shape of a traditional five-petalled Tudor Rose.
Today most roses are cultivated varieties. Cultivated roses, generally result from selective hybridisation or breeding. Cultivated varieties are usually referred to by their registered trade, or accepted name.
The garden also provides an excellent opportunity for a “Rose enthusiast” to know about different varieties of roses. Under each category of Rose plant, a brick is placed with information on its country of origin, year the breed was created and the accepted name. Which will make an excellent material for learning about Roses.
Just outside the garden fence are picnic area with bbq’s and shelters. The garden is available as a venue for private functions of which bookings can be made by contacting Parks Victoria on 131963
Entry to the Garden is free.
