History of the area and the Boat House
The historic Studley Park Boathouse is situated at Yarra Bend National Park and is the oldest continually operating public boathouse in Victoria. Yarra Bend Park and Studley Park were declared as reserves in 1877. In 1929, several other reserves nearby were combined to create 260 hectare Yarra Bend National Park, though never been given formal national park status.
Charles Grimes, the acting Surveyor General of NSW, was the first white man to see Yarra River in 1803. He with his team mates, started in a boat up the Yarra to investigate and their journey stopped near Dight’s Falls as they could not get the boat over the obstruction. Landing there, they examined the country, near the neck of land now known as Studley Park.
When Robert Hoddle surveyed Melbourne as a prelude to the first crown sale of suburban land, he was impressed upon this neck of land as a fitting area for permanent reserve, and he set apart 203 acres of the land as reserve.
In 1840, John Hodgson who was born at Studley in Yorkshire, takes a squatting license over the land on the eastern bank of Yarra River and subsequently names the area Studley Park.
A small boat hire business ‘Riversdale’ was established by Mr Burns in 1863. The area was prone to flooding and the business suffered huge losses due to floods. In the 1878 and 1880 floods his house was submerged and his family escaped with considerable difficulty. Thirty of his boats were also damaged. The effect of 1934 flooding was even worse.
The boathouse had its ups and downs over the years and in the 50’s and 60’s it fell on hard times. But since the 70’s it saw a resurgence of people’s interest. The Boathouse is currently managed by KRT Riversdale Pty Ltd. Along with the boat hire business, it also run a restaurant, café and a Kiosk at the venue. Boathouse also serves as a venue for social functions and weddings. On a fine weather weekend, the boathouse will be full of people having a god time enjoying sweeping views of the Yarra River and natural bushland.
