Pykes Creek Reservoir is located on Pykes Creek, a tributary of the Werribee River, 75 km west of Melbourne near the township of Ballan. Werribee river begins from Wombat State Forest as a small creek, flows through Ballan and Bacchus Marsh where Lerderderg River joins. The Exford Weir situated 6km south of Melton blocks the river’s flow to create the Melton Reservoir. River ends its 110km journey when it reaches the Port Phillip Bay at the suburb of Werribee. Apart from Pykes Creek Reservoir, Werribee river system uses Melton Reservoir and Merrimu Reservoir for water storage. Pykes Creek Reservoir is managed by Southern Rural Water.
Pykes Creek reservoir enables a storage of around 22,119ML of water which is used for irrigation in Bacchus Marsh and Werribee. It is also used to supply drinking water to Myrniong after processing at Myrniong Water Filtration Plant which is located close by.
Pykes Creek reservoir is a popular picnic spot, offering activities like swimming, boating, skiing, fishing, walking, and bird watching. Brown Trout and redfin are a plenty at the reservoir keeping anglers busy.
The reservoir was constructed in 1911 by the Water Supply Commission. The work began on 1908. Government accepted the tender submitted by J.R. Fisher for an amount of £41,869. The works were carried out by Engineer James Swan who worked for J.R.Fisher. In 1928 the capacity of the reservoir was increased by raising the embankment by another 10 feet.
There is a boat ramp at the reservoir for launching boat, kayak or jet ski however it will be wise to check water levels prior to visiting the Pykes Creek.

No entry free and picnic areas cannot be reserved. Early bird gets the worm.
Horse riding, abseiling, shooting, archery and paraflying are prohibited at the reservoir without prior written permission. Camping overnight is not permitted.

Fires are prohibited at all times.
