The 150-year-old Prahran Market located at Prahran is one of the oldest continuously running markets in Melbourne. The market is also known as “Food lovers Market” being famous for outstanding food and hard to find specialities.
History of Prahran Market
In the 1850’s Prahran was a growing municipality with small farms and market gardens. The newly elected council felt a need for a central market place. The council established a market near the corner of Greville and Grattan Street at Prahran. By the 1880’s the market was getting overcrowded and the council took a decision to move it to the current location at Commercial Road. The New Prahran market was opened at Commercial Road in 1891.
The market was extended in 1923 with the addition of 48 new stores. During the Great depression years, market served as a distribution point of groceries, clothing and boots for the unemployed. On January 26th, 1950, the fruit and vegetable section of the market was gutted down in a fire. A temporary structure was erected and in 1972, the council sought tenders for the redevelopment of the site and the work was completed in 1976. Land was also purchased behind the Market in the 70s to extend the car park to accommodate more customers. In the 1990’s The Council built a multi-level carpark between Elizabeth and Barry Street.
The market is owned by Stonnington City Council and governed by an independent Board of Directors appointed by the Council.
There are some iconic shops at the market and one such notable one is MJ Mow Gourmet Potatoes. The original shop was opened at the market in 1891. Daniel Wong Mow, a Cantonese dentist who migrated to Melbourne and practised in Lonsdale Street, was invited by Prahran Council to encourage his friends to open a fruit and vegetable stall in the new premises in 1891. Mow started operating the shop and now it is the third generation running it.
