The Northland Shopping Centre

Northland Shopping Centre is situated 11km north of Melbourne CBD in the suburb of Preston. The shopping Centre is home to major stores like Myer, K Mart, Target, JB HiFi, Best and Less, Aldi, Woolworth and Coles. It also houses Hoyts Cinemas and has a large food court where Indian, Mexican, Chinese and middle eastern delicacies are available.Shopping Centre has 95,311 m2 of retail space and nearly 5000 parking spots.

The land where Northland Shopping Centre stands today belonged to the Housing Commission where nissen huts were built in 1952 to accommodate migrants. Nissen hut is a tunnel-shaped hut made of corrugated iron with a cement floor. At one stage these huts housed around 10,000 people in Preston. On 3rd April 1963, the land was sold to Myer Emporium, where Northland Shopping centre was built at an estimated cost of 9million pounds. Built and Owned by Myer, Northland Shopping Centre was opened to Public on 4th October 1966 with a distinction of being the largest indoor shopping mall in the state of Victoria. There were nearly 80 tenants at the shopping centre at that time. Now Northland has around 330 tenants.

In 1982 Northland was sold to Gandel Group of Companies. Today Northland is owned by GPT and Vicinity Group. The GPT Group is one of Australia’s largest diversified property groups which manages a $21.5 billion portfolio of offices, logistics, business parks and prime shopping centres across Australia. In 2014, GPT Group invested $496 million to acquire half share in the Northland Shopping Centre from the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB). Northland has undergone many redevelopments over the years and house Myer, Target, Kmart, HOYTS Cinema, Coles, Woolworths, Toys “R” Us and Aldi and includes more than 245 specialty stores. In today’s value Northland is worth nearly a Billion Australian Dollars.
