Carrum beach is situated 34km southeast of Melbourne CBD at the suburb of Carrum. The beach is situated between Bonbeach and Seaford beach, and it is where Patterson River enters the sea. Carrum Railway station is situated 200m south of Carrum beach.
Carrum Surf Life Saving Club which was established in the 1930’s is situated opposite the Carrum Railway Station. The Patterson River being a busy recreational boating location, the club’s contribution is an important one to the community and the club patrols the northern section of the beach. Swimming near the river mouth may not be advisable due to strong under currents and the boat traffic. As usual the safest place is between the flags. The beach can be accessed from many points including the entry point near the lifesaving club. The beach can be accessed from Johnson Avenue, The Beauty Spot or through the parking lots which can be accessed via Old Post Office Lane or Stephen Street.
Beauty Spot is a small park area situated along the side of Patterson River mouth. It has picnic tables and BBQ. Beauty Spot is also home to World War I Memorial. There is a board walk along the Carrum Beach. Patterson River Carpark is situated near Beauty Spot. Here rocks separate the beach from the mouth of Patterson River.
Carrum Sailing and Motorboat Club situated at Johnson Ave has a long and distinguished history with a lineage from Patterson River Motor Yacht Club established in 1946.
Carrum Foreshore has a good, fenced children’s playground with a nautical theme. It has little lighthouse with telescope for children to look across the bay. Next to the playground has two shelters with table and facilities for BBQ. Toilet facility, water tap, and seatings are also provided at the foreshore.
Ticketed parking is available which can be accessed by Old Post Office Lane or Stephens Street.
As a part of Carrum revitalisation project, a new foreshore park has opened in Carrum. It has a water play area, BBQ’s, seating and a kiosk opening in 2021. The lush, green, grassed area is also the perfect place for a socially distanced picnic looking out over the bay.
